Consequences of sports betting and academic performance of undergraduates of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Calabar, Cross River State

Abstract

The purpose of the study was to investigate consequences of sport betting and academic performance of undergraduates of Human Kinetics and Health Education, University of Calabar, Cross River State, Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, two null hypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Literature was reviewed accordingly. Descriptive survey research design was utilized for the study. The population of the study consisted of all undergraduates of the department of human Kinetics and Health Education. Stratified random sampling technique was adopted t select undergraduates across the various levels while systematic sampling technique was adopted t select the 176 respondents used for the study. A structured questionnaire was the instrument used for data collection. The instrument was validated and Cronbach alpha was employed to ascertain its reliability. Pearson product moment correlation statistical tool was utilized for data analysis. The result obtained from analysis of data revealed that there was a significant relationship between lack of concentration, absenteeism and academic performance of undergraduates. Based on these findings it was recommended among others that trained counsellors should continue to engage with students in order to sensitize them on the need to concentrate during lessons by avoiding sport betting as a means of improving their academic performance.
