Child Abuse And Academic Performance Of Secondary School Students In Calabar South Local Government Area Of Cross River State, Nigeria.

Abstract
This study examined child abuse on academic performance of secondary school students in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. Using four(4) Secondary Schools in Calabar South Local Government Area. The four (4) Secondary Schools are: Government Secondary School Manye Avenue, Government Secondary School Atu, Christian High School Atakpa, and University cof Cross River State Secondary School Calabar South. The study used both primary and secondary data (questionnaire and interview).40 respondents were chosen as a sample from both staff and students. Two hypotheses were tested with the aid of Chi-Square and the data collected were tabulated and analyzed using simple percentages. The result of the analysis revealed that there is a significant relationship between child physical abuse and students’ academic performance in secondary schools in Calabar South Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. It also showed that there is a significant relationship between emotional abuseandstudents’academicperformanceinsecondaryschoolsinCalabarSouth Local Government Area of Cross River State, Nigeria. The study recommended among others that the Government should employ more counselors to help and guide parents/guardians on how to treat their children/wards to avoid child maltreatment. Parents and guardians should adopt good parental care, love, and concern for their children; this could help them to perform better in school. Teachers should pay special attention to identify forms of abuse and support abused learners. Upon identification of the abused learners, teachers should report such cases to the police.
